Bahamas Locale: Regal Jumping Spider (Phidippus regius)

Stage: i4 (4th Instar) | Origin: Captive Bred

The Bahamas Advantage

  • High-Contrast “White Phase”: While relatively rare, the Bahamas locale is famous for producing a high percentage of “White Phase” females — stunning spiders with snowy-white or silver coats contrasted against deep black markings.
  • Sleek & Athletic: Unlike the heavy-set “bulldog” build of the Florida locales, Bahamas spiders tend to be more slender and long-legged, giving them a very elegant, agile appearance in their enclosure.
  • Striking Iridescence: The males of this locale are particularly sharp, often displaying brilliant teal or emerald-green chelicerae that pop against their crisp black-and-white tuxedo markings.
  • Inquisitive Nature: These island jumpers are known for being exceptionally curious and “flighty” in a playful way, often spending hours exploring the highest points of their habitat.

Specifics for i4 Slings

  • Size: Currently approx. 5–7mm.
  • Current Diet: Hunting Drosophila hydei (Large Fruit Flies) reliably.
  • Appearance: At the i4 stage, they are in their juvenile “tuxedo” phase. Their potential for high-silver or white colouration will begin to reveal itself over the next 3 to 4 moults.
  • Sexing: Sold as unsexed.

The Growth Journey: Transitioning Feeders

Our i4 Bahamas slings are currently established on fruit flies. To help them reach their full athletic potential, they should be transitioned to larger prey as they grow.

  • Future Diet: We recommend moving to Green Bottle flies at the i6 or i7 stage. Their erratic flight patterns provide excellent mental and physical enrichment for this active locale.
  • Expert Guide: For more details on the transition from fruit flies to larger feeders, read our feeding blog post here.

📷 About Our Photos: Variation & Potential

Please Note: The images provided include photos of our actual i4 spiderlings currently in stock. Because these are unsexed juveniles, they have not yet developed their adult colours. Like all Phidippus regius, they undergo a spectacular transformation as they grow. While the Bahamas lineage is famous for its high-contrast silver and white potential, every spider is a unique individual — the final adult colouration is a result of genetic diversity, making the journey of watching your sling grow an exciting “unboxing” of its true traits!

Note on Sexing: This spider is sold as unsexed. If you have a preference for a male or female, please message us — we’ll always do our best to find your perfect match.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Bahamas locale special?
The Bahamas locale of Phidippus regius is prized for producing a high percentage of “White Phase” females — spiders with snowy-white or silver adult coats contrasted against deep black markings. They are also notably more slender and long-legged than Florida locales, giving them an elegant, athletic appearance.

What do i4 Bahamas jumping spiders eat?
At the i4 stage, slings eat Drosophila hydei (large fruit flies), fed twice weekly. As they grow to i6/i7, we recommend transitioning to Green Bottle flies to match their increasing size and appetite.

Are Bahamas jumping spiders good for beginners?
Yes — Phidippus regius as a species is widely considered the best beginner jumping spider. The Bahamas locale is particularly inquisitive and active, making them engaging and rewarding to keep even for first-time owners.

How big do Phidippus regius Bahamas get?
Adult females typically reach 15–20mm in body length. They tend to be slightly more slender than Florida females, with a more elegant, long-legged build.

Do Bahamas jumping spiders need heating in the UK?
Yes — they prefer 23°C–27°C. A thermostat-controlled heat mat is recommended for UK keepers, particularly during autumn and winter months when room temperatures drop below their comfort zone.

Is it legal to keep Phidippus regius in the UK?
Yes — Phidippus regius is not a protected or restricted species under UK law. No licence is required to keep or purchase them. All our spiders are captive bred in the UK, so there are no import or CITES concerns.
