The Subtle Beauty: Chrome/ Ghost Porcelain Roach Starter Colony (Gyna caffrorum)
Elevate your collection with the Ghost Porcelain Roach, one of the most elegant and underrated species in the invertebrate hobby. Native to Africa, Gyna caffrorum is famous for its gorgeous adult form: a wide, teardrop-shaped body with a sophisticated "chrome" or buff-colored pattern that looks almost like a piece of polished stone.
While the adults are stunning surface-dwellers, the nymphs are active burrowers. This "two-tier" lifestyle makes them an excellent addition to bioactive displays, as they help aerate the substrate while providing a beautiful visual reward when they mature.
Why Choose Ghost Porcelain Roaches?
- Stunning Adult Pattern: Adults feature a unique, marbled "dusty" appearance with dark speckling that provides excellent camouflage in leaf litter.
- Non-Climbers: Unlike many other roaches, Gyna caffrorum generally cannot scale smooth glass or plastic, making them much easier to manage in standard enclosures.
- Burrowing Nymphs: The nymphs are highly effective at processing organic matter deep in the substrate, acting as a natural part of your cleanup crew.
- Active & Fast: They are a "high-energy" species. When they aren't burrowed, they move with surprising speed, making them exciting to observe during feeding time.

Pro-Tip for the Invert Keeper
The "Leaf Litter Layer" Secret: While many roaches thrive on egg crates, Chrome Roaches much prefer a thick, 2-inch layer of natural leaf litter (like Oak or Maple) on top of their substrate. The adults spend most of their time "surfing" through the leaves rather than sitting on top of them. Providing this dense cover reduces stress and significantly increases your breeding success, as it mimics the forest floor environment where they naturally forage and mate!
