Mohawk Jumping Spider (Epeus flavobilineatus)

Stage: Juvenile / Sub-Adult (approx. 7–10mm) | Origin: Captive Bred

⚠️ SHOW COLLECTION ONLY — In-Person Pickup Required
In line with our commitment as ethical breeders and keepers, Epeus flavobilineatus is an exceptionally delicate tropical species and is strictly unavailable for postal delivery. These specimens are available for in-person collection at our shows only.

The Epeus Advantage

  • Living Jewel: Epeus flavobilineatus features a vibrant, nearly translucent emerald-green to yellow body that appears to glow under light — one of the most visually striking jumping spiders in the hobby.
  • The “Mohawk”: Males of this species develop a spectacular V-shaped crest of bright hairs on top of their heads as they mature — an iconic display feature unlike anything seen in Phidippus or other commonly kept species.
  • Sleek & Athletic: Unlike the stockier Phidippus build, Epeus jumpers have a slender profile and exceptionally long, agile legs — making them mesmerising to watch as they navigate their enclosure.
  • Highly Inquisitive: Intensely alert sight-hunters with a strong awareness of their keeper. They are active, engaging, and endlessly entertaining to observe.

Specifics for Juveniles / Sub-Adults

  • Size: Currently approx. 7–10mm.
  • Current Diet: Feeding on Drosophila hydei (large fruit flies). Active, flying prey is strongly preferred by this species.
  • Appearance: At this stage, their jewel-like green and yellow colouration is already visible. If they mature into males, the iconic mohawk crest will develop over the next few moults.
  • Sexing: Sold as unsexed juveniles/sub-adults. Males will reveal themselves through the development of their distinctive crest and more vivid colouration as they mature.

⚠️ Important: Epeus flavobilineatus is a more demanding species than Phidippus regius. They require stable tropical conditions and are best suited to keepers with some prior jumping spider experience. We do not recommend them as a first exotic spider.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mohawk Jumping Spider?
Epeus flavobilineatus — commonly known as the Mohawk or Crested Jumping Spider — is a breathtaking arboreal species native to the warm, humid rainforests of South and Southeast Asia. They are prized for their jewel-like emerald-green and yellow colouration, and for the spectacular V-shaped hair crest that males develop on their heads as they mature.

How is Epeus different from Phidippus regius?
Epeus flavobilineatus is a very different keeping experience from Phidippus regius. They are more slender and long-legged, require higher and more stable tropical temperatures (24°C–28°C), and are more sensitive to husbandry inconsistencies. They are best suited to keepers who already have experience with jumping spiders.

Why is this spider collection-only?
As ethical breeders, we prioritise the welfare of our animals above all else. Epeus flavobilineatus is an exceptionally delicate tropical species that we do not consider suitable for postal delivery. Offering them as collection-only at our shows ensures every spider reaches its new home in the best possible condition.

What do Epeus flavobilineatus eat?
They are active, visual hunters that strongly prefer flying prey. At their current size, they feed on Drosophila hydei (large fruit flies). As they grow, they can transition to Green Bottle flies for larger, more stimulating prey.

Will my spider develop the mohawk crest?
The crest is a male-only feature and develops gradually over several moults as the spider reaches sub-adult and adult stages. As these are sold unsexed, there is no guarantee of sex — but if your spider is male, the crest will begin to appear as they mature.

Is it legal to keep Epeus flavobilineatus in the UK?
Yes — Epeus flavobilineatus is not a protected or restricted species under UK law. No licence is required to keep or purchase them. All our specimens are captive bred, so there are no import or CITES concerns.
